Halitosis Treatment Options
Halitosis is defined as chronic, ongoing, bad breath that is unrelieved by traditional treatments, such as flossing, brushing, mouthwash, and other measures of oral hygiene.
Halitosis is different from the “morning breath” that most of us experience, which is easily relieved by cleaning one’s mouth. It is also different from smelly breath caused by the foods we eat, such as meats or pungent vegetables like onions or garlic.
One of the biggest causes of halitosis is poor oral hygiene over the long term. Continual neglect of basic oral hygiene is a key factor that causes malodorous breath. A routine of regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing of the mouth can relieve the condition if it is sustained.
Another primary cause of halitosis is dehydration. If you are continually poorly hydrated, then the dryness or your oral cavity allows the bacteria that cause bad breath to flourish and grow. Dehydration is easily relieved by drinking more water or other beverages such as juice or tea.
Some diseases or conditions of the gastrointestinal tract can cause halitosis as well. To make sure these are not what is causing your bad breath, it is a good idea to see a natural health professional for further assessment.
