Infectious Diarrhea Treatment
What is infectious diarrhea?
Infectious diarrhea, also known as gastroenteritis or, more colloquially, ‘stomach flu,’ is the result of inflammation of the stomach and the small intestine. The inflammation is most commonly the result of a virus (sometimes the rotavirus) but can also be caused by bacteria (such as E. coli), parasitic, or fungal infections.
How common is it?
Infectious diarrhea is extremely prevalent, with approximately 2 billion cases worldwide each year and about 1.3 million deaths each year. Although it occurs more frequently in developing countries, it does still occur in developed nations, like the U.S., and Europe. Younger children are more susceptible to this condition, both due to weaker, less developed immune systems and poorer hygiene habits.
How is it spread?
Infectious diarrhea is typically contracted by the consumption of contaminated food or beverages. Additionally, it can be spread by physical contact with contaminated surfaces. Individuals should wash their hands thoroughly with soap before eating and drinking to prevent the spread of this infection. Food should always be properly prepared and thoroughly cooked.
What are the symptoms of infectious diarrhea?
As its name suggests, infectious diarrhea is marked by severe diarrhea. Other symptoms include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. These symptoms may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
As infectious diarrhea is typically an acute disease, in mild or moderate cases, it can usually resolve on its own without special medical attention. However, longer and more severe cases, especially those found in younger children, run the risk of dangerous levels of dehydration.
Contact us for information about our natural protocols for infectious diarrhea treatment. Some natural remedies include drinking coconut water to help replenish lost fluids. Consuming probiotic foods or supplements help to fight off the bad bacteria that cause diarrhea. Zinc supplements reduce the severity and help with intestinal absorption of water and electrolytes. Ginger, nutmeg and turmeric essential oils can also help to relieve the discomfort of diarrhea.
Each protocol has been tested and refined for quality assurance, and the guidelines are intended to empower people with the tools to take charge of their own health. What’s more, the Alternative DrMCare natural medical self-care protocols are designed to help you and your family holistically care for yourself.
