Insomnia Causes and Treatment
Insomnia can be extremely debilitating and without treatment can seriously affect physical and mental health.
Although sleeping pills can assist, particularly in extreme cases, where the insomnia is caused by a tragic event, acute illness, or pain, it is a temporary solution; there can be serious side effects from long-term use of sleeping medication.
The root cause of insomnia should be isolated, and new routines to assist in getting proper sleep initiated. Insomnia treatment will vary from person to person, as will the causes.
Herbal supplements can help where insomnia is caused by a mineral deficiency. Taking melatonin supplements close to bedtime can assist the mind in preparing for sleep.
Valerian Root is a natural supplement that helps the mind relax and may be helpful if the lack of sleep is caused by stress. Lavender and chamomile are also helpful.
Meditation is a very effective Insomnia Treatment, as it helps to calm the mind and relax the body.
It may be much harder than it sounds but establishing an effective sleep routine is one of the best insomnia treatments.
Sleep Routines for Insomnia Treatment
Sometimes our bodies just won’t switch to sleep mode. In the same way, we train babies to sleep when it’s needed, we can retrain ourselves with some simple sleep routines to treat insomnia. What causes some people to sleep may keep others awake.
Suggestions for an effective sleep routine include:
- Not eating more than three hours from bedtime
- If your schedule allows setting approximately the same time for beginning a winding down routine and preparing to sleep each night
- A hot bath close to bedtime
- Soft relaxing music and dimmer lights approaching bedtime.
- If it helps you sleep reading or watching TV
- Completing relaxing mediation routines or yoga close to bedtime.
- Ensuring your room is dark or light enough, depending on what helps you sleep
- Playing white noise or relaxing tapes at bedtime
