How to Treat Gallbladder Problems
The gallbladder is a small organ located underneath the liver. Its physiological function is to aid in the digestion of fats from ingested food. This digestion takes place using a fluid mixture called bile, which is delivered into the small intestine. Here, nutrients that are the products of fat breakdown are absorbed into the bloodstream.
What kind of problems can the gallbladder have?
Some examples of gallbladder problems that may develop include gallbladder inflammation, gallstones, and bile duct stones, and acalculous gallbladder disease.
Gallstones are small pieces of hardened cholesterol or, more rarely, calcium bilirubinate. Although usually only a few millimeters in diameter, and therefore inconsequential, if they come to grow several centimeters wide, they may cause an obstruction of the bile ducts, leading to inflammation, pain, nausea, and vomiting.
When these stones develop in the bile duct or develop in the gallbladder before being pushed into the duct, they are referred to as bile duct stones.
Gallstones that are left untreated for extended periods of time may lead to the development of pus in the gallbladder or to the perforation of the gallbladder. These can, in turn, lead to the spread of infection throughout the body, called ascending cholangitis and sepsis.
Although gallbladder problems of such severity are quite rare, they are certainly life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to treat gallbladder problems in their early stages when they do arise.
Acalculous gallbladder disease occurs when the symptoms resembling that of gallstones arise, but without the presence of an actual gallstone.
What are symptoms of gallbladder problems?
Symptoms of various gallbladder problems include pain in the section of the abdomen around the gallbladder (the upper right), pain extending to the right upper back beside the shoulder blade, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and jaundice.
