My sincere passion for and roots in medicine and natural healing run deep and strong. It began at the tender age of 5 years old, when my dear grandpa Sam, a WWII U.S. Army surgeon and general practitioner, took me on house calls in his old Studebaker. I was curious about the fluid-filled bell jars hosting strange things on his back car seat and he regaled me with fascinating stories about Mr. Zuckerman’s prostate, the neighbor’s bladder polyps, etc., painting such colorful pictures of these people that they came alive in my hungry, young mind. I was also influenced by my uncles who were physicians, and by our old, crusty, British family physician, Dr. Russell, whose clever, dry wit and gentle encouragement to explore medicine as a career inspired me to yearn to be a doctor from my youth. Though, I felt a strong inkling that there was far more to healing than what my childhood mentors knew and practiced.
As the 1960s and 70s unfolded, the Human Potential Movement impacted my mind with the meeting of Eastern mysticism and ancient systems of healing with Western science and philosophy. I was first introduced to alternative medicine when I read a classic textbook on naturopathic health care at the age of 17 years old, attended seminars on herbal medicine and holistic nutrition, and then, discovered what really worked to improve health through personal experimentation. I reasoned that the only way to truly know whether something worked to improve health and well-being was to try it yourself. Hands-on learning experiences always appealed to me. It has served me well over the years, creating a solid foundation of proven knowledge and acumen.
I decided in college to pursue a career in family medicine, specializing in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), since they were the most comprehensive systems of healing of which I was aware at the time. I attended courses and seminars in everything from acupressure to Zen meditation learned the fundamental skills of naturopathic fasting and detoxification methods, macrobiotic cooking, Hatha Yoga, polarity therapy, therapeutic massage, essential oils and flower essences, you name it! My college apartment walls were lined with layers of shelves covered with small pots of the many, different, medicinal herbs that I gathered on herb walks in the countryside and from the seeds that I purchased and grew. My indoor herb & spice garden was a thing of beauty, pleasure and practical value and helped me to learn about the healing power of plants. It also motivated me toward a modicum of mastery in the culinary arts. I have been an avid student and practitioner of the gentle, beautiful and powerful, ancient Chinese martial arts, Taijijuan and Qigong, since 18 years old, over 35 years.
In my first year of medical school, I organized that college’s first, introductory course in alternative medicine, bringing experts in various fields of CAM to speak to interested students after hours. It was during that course that I had the great fortune of being introduced to homeopathic medicine and was thrilled to discover that there was a truly profound, effective and comprehensive system of natural healing in the Western medical tradition. Up until then, I had been studying Chinese to help learn TCM.
Soon thereafter, I arranged an extended, clinical preceptorship with an accomplished, homeopathic family physician and nutritional specialist, in which I witnessed firsthand; true cures of serious, acute and chronic illnesses that I had been taught in regular medical school were incurable. I then immersed myself in intensive, ongoing study with my homeopathic mentor’s guidance over several years and dedicated my life to the pursuit of excellence in the art and science of homeopathic medicine and nutritional therapy. It was not without some painful bumps along the road, since I had chosen a path far outside of conventional, allopathic medical orthodoxy, but I have never regretted my choice to become an expert in natural, integrative medicine. It is my ‘path with a heart’ and deeply nourishes my soul to serve others in this way of true healing.
Alternative DrMCare Natural Medical Self-Care Protocols is the perfected end result of many years of intensive, ongoing, scientific research study and the clinical wisdom gleaned from the day to day practice of integrative nutritional medicine and sincere dedication to the honored principle of primum non nocere (first do no harm). It was a ‘labor of love’ and a gift to my patients and their families, friends and associates, who encouraged me for years to share my vast medical knowledge, and now to you too, to help promote and maintain your best possible health, happiness and well-being.
